The Jerusalem Municipality, together with the Ministry of Tourism and the Jerusalem Development Authority, is accelerating the development of the Historic Basin cable car initiative – a plan to build an aerial cable car running between Jerusalem’s First Train Station and the Old City’s Dung Gate/the northern entrance to Silwan. On December 13, the project was presented to the National Infrastructure Committee (Haaretz reported previously that this step was imminent). The plan is for the project to be operational as soon as 2021. We have reported several times about the highly problematic aspects of this project, which is designed to strengthen the narrative and the role of the radical settler community living in Silwan, while aggressively marginalizing the Palestinian presence in the Old City and Historic Basin, replacing it with a Biblical-Jewish Disneyland. More details of the plan and our analysis are here.
